Dyno Tuning
What It Is
Dyno tuning maximizes the performance of your engine. Calibrating the air/fuel ratio and ignition timing and configuring the ECU’s operating strategies — safety limits, actuator control, and automated protections.
Race Protocol operates a Mainline all-wheel drive hub dyno rated to support up to 4,600 horsepower. The dyno mounts directly to the vehicle’s hubs rather than using rollers, which eliminates tire slip and delivers consistent, repeatable results from one pull to the next. That range and precision make it equally well suited to high-horsepower turbocharged builds and to low-horsepower four-cylinder spec racing engines, where gains are measured in fractions of a horsepower and every change needs to be verified accurately.
In-house tuning. Our tuners handle everything from base maps and initial startup to full load tuning, working to extract performance while keeping the engine and drivetrain within safe, reliable operating limits. We place a strong focus on steady-state tuning, holding the engine at specific speed and load points under controlled conditions so each area of the map is built from accurate, stable data.
Dyno rental. Independent tuners and teams can rent dyno time to test their own vehicles. Rental covers use of the equipment only. Renters will need to bring their own tools if they wish to perform any mechanical work on their vehicle. If you need a dyno operator, we can provide one for an additional charge.
The Benefit
A properly tuned engine delivers more power, better fuel economy, and greater reliability. A bad tune doesn’t just leave power on the table; it can shorten the life of your engine. A proper tune does the opposite.
Cost
- All dyno sessions carry a $300 minimum
- Tuning by Race Protocol: $225 per hour. Standalone ECU tuning typically takes 10 or more hours
- Dyno rental: $175 per hour
- Operator for dyno rental: an additional $50 per hour ($225 per hour including rental)
- Troubleshooting and diagnostics on the dyno: $225 per hour
- Power Measurement only: $300
Why Race Protocol Is Different
Most shops start from a base map, run a few pulls at wide-open throttle, and call it good enough. That approach might get a car running, but it leaves real performance and reliability on the table.
At Race Protocol, every vehicle is tuned from scratch — every cell of each map is calibrated specifically to your engine. At a minimum, all tunes include the following:
- Configure Injector dead time compensation based on in engine testing, not copy-pasted from manufacturer data (even top-tier manufacturer data is rarely correct for your specific setup)
- Set Base Timing
- Cold Start & Idle
- Accel Enrichment
- Fuel injection timing
- Environmental Compensations
- Full steady-state tuning of fuel and ignition maps
- Engine Protection Limits
- Tightly controlled water, oil, and intake air temperatures during tuning, so your maps are built on accurate, repeatable data.
The result is a tune built around your engine as installed in your vehicle, not an approximation of it.
Safety. Safety is a priority in every session. The dyno cell is protected by a CO2 fire suppression system that puts out a fire quickly and will not cause further damage to the vehicle if it is ever needed.
